
Load-Bearing Wall
A load-bearing wall carries weight from the roof, the floor, or the walls above it and passes that weight down to a beam, a post, and finally the foundation. A partition wall holds up nothing but itself. Which one you are looking at decides whether a wall can be removed cheaply.
Every pound of tile, framing, insulation, and drywall overhead has to reach the ground, and a load-bearing wall is one of the paths it takes. The wall picks up weight from the framing above, carries it down through the studs, routes it around any door or window with a header, and hands it to a footing or a thickened pad in the slab. A partition wall holds up only itself and the drywall screwed to it.
The code treats the two as different animals. IRC Section R602.4 says interior load-bearing walls must be built, framed, and fireblocked the same way exterior walls are. Section R602.5 lets a nonbearing wall use 2x3 studs at 24 inches on center with a single top plate. The difference shows at a framing walk. Full-size studs, doubled top plates, and a post landing under a beam mean the wall carries something.
In Phoenix-metro homes the roof load usually arrives by truss, and a truss spans outside wall to outside wall, so plenty of interior walls carry nothing. Not all of them. A great-room beam, a second floor, or a stepped roof drops weight onto specific interior lines. Scottsdale's submittal guidelines make plans dimension interior bearing footings, coordinate every post between the foundation and roof framing sheets, and add an engineering analysis for any bearing wall over 10 feet tall.
For example, opening a kitchen wall in Scottsdale means an engineered beam sized to the span, posts at both ends, and a pad footing under each post, bearing 18 inches below undisturbed soil under the city's amendment. On a post-tension slab nobody saws that hole until the tendons are located. Then comes a revised structural sheet, a resubmittal, and another inspection.
A load-bearing wall is not a braced wall panel. Bearing walls take gravity pressing down; braced panels take wind pushing sideways. Many walls do both, so ask which walls bear while the framing is open.
