Braced Wall Panel

Without bracing, a wood-framed box can rack under a side load, leaning and deforming into a parallelogram the way an unbraced bookshelf tips over. A braced wall panel is the fix: a specific length of exterior or interior wall built to take lateral loads, the sideways pushes from wind and earthquakes, and transfer them down into the foundation. Braced wall panels stiffen the structure so it stays square and standing.

The 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) governs them in Section R602.10. The code groups panels into braced wall lines (rows of bracing across the building) and prescribes how far apart those lines can be, the minimum width of each panel, and the approved bracing methods. Common methods include let-in diagonal bracing, structural wood sheathing nailed to a set pattern (method WSP), and continuous portal frames around wide openings like a garage door. The code ties the required amount of bracing to the home's wind speed, seismic category, number of stories, and wall length.

For example, a two-story home in the East Valley with a wide front garage opening often uses a continuous-sheathed portal frame on each side of that opening to satisfy R602.10, because the narrow wall sections beside a large door would not brace enough on their own. The plans show each braced wall line, and inspectors verify the nailing and hold-downs before drywall covers them.

A braced wall panel is not the same as a header, which carries the vertical load over an opening. A header handles weight bearing down; a braced wall panel handles forces pushing sideways. Both can sit in the same wall, and a home needs both to be safe. Arizona's relatively low seismic demand still requires wind bracing, so R602.10 applies to nearly every framed home in the state.
