A lab test is the only way to know what is in your water. PFAS have no taste, color, or smell. The EPA's 2024 drinking-water rule caps PFOA and PFOS at 4.0 parts per trillion (ppt) for public water systems. That standard does not legally bind a private well, but it is the yardstick to measure your own result against. Why a private well owner has to think about PFAS
You have to think about PFAS on a private well because no one else is checking it, and Arizona has no state limit to fall back on. ADEQ is clear that it does not regulate private wells, and it encourages well owners to educate themselves and test their own water. A city utility samples constantly and reports the results. A private well owner is the utility. If PFAS are in your groundwater, the only way you will ever know is a lab test you pay for.
PFAS are widespread because they were used in so many products. They earned the nickname forever chemicals because they do not break down easily in the environment, so once they reach groundwater they stay.

ADHS links PFAS exposure to increased cholesterol, reduced immune response, lower chance of getting pregnant, effects on children's growth and learning, and an increased risk of kidney and testicular cancer. The EPA went further in its 2024 rule, setting the health-based goal for PFOA and PFOS at zero, based on its finding that both are likely to cause cancer. Those are the stakes behind a water test that costs a few hundred dollars.
What the EPA's 2024 PFAS limits actually say
The EPA finalized enforceable PFAS limits for public drinking water on April 10, 2024, and they give you a clear measuring stick. The National Primary Drinking Water Regulation sets these Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs):
- PFOA: 4.0 ppt
- PFOS: 4.0 ppt
- PFHxS: 10 ppt
- PFNA: 10 ppt
- HFPO-DA (GenX chemicals): 10 ppt
- A Hazard Index of 1 for mixtures of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and PFBS together
The 4 ppt figure is meaningful for a reason beyond health: it is close to the lowest level at which a lab can reliably measure PFOA and PFOS. The EPA also set the health goal, the level with no known risk, at zero for those two.
One thing the rule does not do is reach your well. The EPA standard applies to public water systems only. Private wells are not regulated under it. Public systems must finish initial monitoring by 2027 and meet the MCLs by 2029. None of that schedule touches a private well, which is exactly why the responsibility falls on you. The EPA limit is the number to compare your result against, even though no law forces a private well to meet it.
How to test your Arizona well for PFAS
You test for PFAS by sending a water sample to a certified lab, because hardware-store strip kits cannot detect parts-per-trillion contaminants. ADHS directs well owners to certified drinking-water labs and runs a PFAS program specifically for private well owners through its Office of Environmental Health. A certified lab provides the right sample bottles and detailed collection instructions, which matter more for PFAS than for most tests, since PFAS are in so many everyday items that a careless sample can pick up contamination from clothing, containers, or even some sunscreens.
A few practical points:
- Use a certified lab. ADHS maintains a list of certified drinking-water labs, and only certified results carry weight with a lender, county, or buyer.
- Follow the clean-sampling rules. The lab's instructions exist to keep stray PFAS off the sample. Wear what they tell you and avoid the products they warn against on sampling day.
- Test the full new-well panel too. PFAS is one concern, but Arizona groundwater also commonly carries arsenic, nitrate, fluoride, and uranium, none of which you can taste. Run those alongside PFAS on a new well.
Location raises the odds in some parts of Arizona. PFAS contamination is tied to past use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), the firefighting foam used at airports and military airfields, so wells near those sites carry more risk. ADHS lists firefighting foam among the common sources of PFAS. If your well sits near a current or former airport, air base, or industrial site, PFAS moves higher on your test list. A new well with no nearby source is lower risk, but the only way to rule it out is still a lab result, not a guess.

What to do if your well tests high for PFAS
If your well comes back above the EPA's 4 ppt PFOA or PFOS level, you treat the water, because PFAS do not boil off or filter out with a basic system. ADHS is direct that boiling water will not remove PFAS, and that bottled water is not required to be tested for it, so neither is an automatic fix. The two treatment methods ADHS points to are a granular activated carbon (GAC) filter and reverse osmosis (RO). Both can reduce PFAS, often installed as a point-of-use unit at the kitchen tap for drinking and cooking, or as a whole-house system for higher levels.
ADHS also offers guidance on what water you can still use while PFAS are present. Showering, washing dishes, doing laundry, and irrigating land are generally fine; drinking, preparing infant formula, cooking, brushing teeth, and washing produce are the uses to address first, because they put the water in or on your body. That distinction lets you keep living in the home while you size and install treatment.
