
IRC R802: Roof-Ceiling Framing
IRC R802 sizes the wood that holds up your roof: rafters and trusses. It sets the maximum span a given rafter can cover based on its size, the lumber, and the roof load, and it requires rafter or ceiling ties so the roof does not push the walls outward.
Section R802 of the International Residential Code (IRC) is the roof-framing rulebook. It sizes the rafters or trusses that span your house, sets how far each member can reach, and makes sure the roof does not spread the exterior walls apart. In Arizona the roof carries less snow than almost anywhere, but it bakes in heat and takes hard monsoon wind uplift, so the connections matter as much as the spans.
What R802 requires
R802 covers two ways to frame a roof: stick-framed rafters cut on site, or factory-built trusses. For rafters, the code sizes each one off span tables rather than a single number, because the right size depends on the lumber, the spacing, and the load. The rule points you straight to the tables:
Rafters shall be sized based on the rafter spans specified in Tables R802.4.1(1) through R802.4.1(8).
A heavier roof or a longer reach means a deeper rafter (a 2x10 instead of a 2x8) or tighter spacing. The second R802 job is resisting rafter thrust. A sloped rafter wants to push the top of the wall outward, so the code requires ceiling joists or rafter ties low in the attic to tie the two sides together. If those ties sit higher in the attic for a vaulted ceiling, the allowable rafter span gets cut by an adjustment factor.
Most production and custom homes in the Valley use engineered roof trusses instead of cut rafters. A truss is a pre-engineered triangle of smaller members designed by the manufacturer to a stamped layout, which speeds framing and clears long spans without interior bearing walls.
What it means for an Arizona custom home
For example, a single-story home in Rio Verde with a low-slope roof and wide great room is a natural truss job: the trusses span wall to wall, so the interior can stay open. Low slope is common here because there is no snow to shed, but a shallow pitch leaves less attic depth, which squeezes both the framing and the room for insulation. That is the heat angle. A hot, shallow attic needs the truss layout coordinated with the insulation plan so you can still hit the required ceiling R-value without crushing the insulation at the eaves.
Monsoon wind uplift is the other Arizona driver. Roof-to-wall connections get hurricane-style metal clips so a gust does not peel the roof off. Inspectors check those clips at framing before the roof gets sheathed.
Edition note
The rafter-span framework and the rafter-tie rules are consistent across the 2018, 2021, and 2024 IRC. The 2021 edition clarified how ceiling joists resist thrust depending on their height in the attic, which mostly affects vaulted ceilings.
