
IRC R302: Fire-Resistant Construction
IRC R302 sets the fire separation between your garage and the living space. A wall shared with the house needs at least 1/2-inch gypsum board on the garage side, and a ceiling under habitable rooms above the garage needs 5/8-inch Type X gypsum board, plus a self-closing rated door.
The attached garage is the most fire-prone room touching your house. It holds the car, the gas can, the water heater, paint, and the lawn mower, all next to the place your family sleeps. IRC Section R302 builds a fire-resistant wall and ceiling between the garage and the living space so a fire in the garage is slowed down long enough for everyone to get out. This page covers the garage separation, the part of R302 most homeowners actually deal with.
What R302.6 requires
The separation is built from gypsum board (drywall), and the required thickness depends on what is on the other side. Table R302.6 sets two key numbers. The wall between the garage and the house, and the garage ceiling, needs at least 1/2-inch gypsum board applied to the garage side. But where there is habitable space above the garage, like a bedroom or bonus room over the bays, the ceiling under that room must be at least 5/8-inch Type X gypsum board, which is the denser, more fire-resistant grade.
The door between the garage and house is governed too. Here is the door requirement:
Openings from a private garage directly into a room used for sleeping purposes shall not be permitted. Other openings between the garage and residence shall be equipped with solid wood doors not less than 1 3/8 inches in thickness, solid or honeycomb-core steel doors not less than 1 3/8 inches thick, or 20-minute fire-rated doors, equipped with a self-closing or self-latching device.
What it means in practice
In plain terms: you cannot have a door from the garage straight into a bedroom, and the garage door into the house has to be a solid or rated door that swings shut and latches on its own. The self-closing hinge is the part homeowners most often defeat by propping the door open, which quietly removes the protection the code requires.
For example, on a Scottsdale custom home with a guest suite over a three-car garage, the builder hangs 5/8-inch Type X on the entire garage ceiling under that suite and 1/2-inch on the common wall, then sets a 20-minute rated, self-closing door at the entry. That ceiling upgrade is easy to miss on plans, and an inspector will fail the drywall inspection if the wrong board went up under the living space.
How it connects
R302 also covers fire separation between attached dwelling units, draftstopping, and flame-spread limits on foam insulation, but for a single-family custom home the garage separation is the provision that shapes the build. Edition note
The garage separation thicknesses (1/2-inch general, 5/8-inch Type X under habitable space) and the door rules are consistent across the 2018, 2021, and 2024 IRC. The 2024 edition reorganizes some adjacent fire provisions but does not change these garage numbers.
