Defensible Space

In short

Defensible space is the managed buffer between a home and the wildland around it, cleared and thinned to slow a wildfire and protect the structure from embers, flames, and heat. Arizona organizes it into zones measured outward from the house, typically reaching up to 100 feet.

Clearing and thinning the area around a home so a wildfire has less fuel to carry flames to the structure is what creates defensible space. It is not a fire break of bare dirt. It is a managed landscape where vegetation is spaced, pruned, and kept low enough that an approaching fire drops to the ground, slows down, and gives the home, and firefighters, a fighting chance.

Arizona's Department of Forestry and Fire Management organizes defensible space into zones measured outward from the house. Zone 0, the first 0 to 5 feet, is the ember-resistant zone: no bark mulch, no woodpiles, no flammable plants tight against the walls. Zone 1 runs out to about 30 feet, where you remove dead plants, keep grass low, and break up continuous shrubs. Zone 2 extends from 30 feet to roughly 100 feet (or the property line), thinned so tree canopies do not touch and a ground fire cannot ladder up into the trees. Embers, not the wall of flame, destroy most homes, which is why Zone 0 right against the structure matters most.

For example, a custom home on acreage in Cave Creek or the Rio Verde foothills, where desert brush meets the building pad, needs that 100-foot graduated buffer: gravel and hardscape near the walls, spaced low plantings out to 30 feet, and thinned native vegetation beyond.

Defensible space connects to a few other rules. It is distinct from a setback, which is a zoning distance from a property line, though the two can overlap. CC&Rs or an HOA may dictate what landscaping is allowed, so wildfire clearing has to fit those. Arizona's Firewise USA communities apply these zone standards neighborhood-wide, and on wildland-adjacent lots we plan the grading and landscape with that buffer built in from the start.
