  • Control circuits remotely. You can switch a circuit on or off from an app, schedule it, or shut off the whole house from your phone when you travel.

A smart panel earns its keep in an Arizona custom home in three ways: it can avoid a service upgrade, it stretches backup power, and it gives you control over heavy desert loads. Each one matters more in a high-end all-electric build.

The biggest financial benefit is load management that avoids a 400-amp upgrade. When you stack an EV charger, a second charger, a pool, a sauna, and big air conditioning onto one home, the total demand can clear what a 200-amp service safely carries. On a home that would never need 400 amps and has no battery, the savings side is thin.

There are two other honest cautions. First, a smart panel relies on software, an app, and an internet connection for its smart features, so it carries the same long-term questions as any connected device: app support, firmware updates, and whether the company stays in business. The panel still works as a normal breaker box if the smarts go dark, but you lose the monitoring and control you paid for. Second, installation and service call for an electrician who knows the specific system, which is easy in the Phoenix metro but worth confirming before you commit.

None of this rules out a smart panel. It just means the value is real only when your home actually uses the load management and monitoring. Match the panel to the loads, and the math works. Add it to a simple home and you are paying for features you will not lean on.

How to decide if it is worth it in your build

A smart electrical panel is worth it when your custom home has heavy, controllable electric loads and a solar or battery system, and it is harder to justify on a simpler home. Run your build through these questions:

  • Are you going all-electric with big loads? EV charging, especially two chargers, a pool, a sauna, electric water heating, and large air conditioning are exactly the loads a smart panel manages well. The more of these you have, the stronger the case.
  • Are you close to needing 400 amps? If your load calculation lands near the edge of a 200-amp service, a smart panel's load management may keep you on 200 amps and save the upgrade cost. Ask your electrician to compare the two paths.

For a modest home with gas heat, one car, and no solar, a smart panel is a nice extra rather than a need.
