Spray foam vs batt insulation: which is better for an Arizona home?

Below is how each material works, how they handle a 150-degree Arizona attic, what they cost, and how to combine them.

What spray foam and fiberglass batt are

Spray foam and fiberglass batt are two very different ways to slow heat, and the difference is air. Spray foam is a liquid sprayed onto a surface, where it expands and hardens into a solid layer that fills every gap. Fiberglass batt is a pre-cut blanket of spun glass fibers that gets pressed into the cavities between studs and joists. Foam stops both heat and air. Batt slows heat but lets air pass through it.

The Department of Energy describes two kinds of spray foam. Open-cell foam is a lighter, softer foam that "uses air as the blowing agent" and has an R-value that "doesn't change over time." Closed-cell foam is denser and gives a higher R-value per inch, and it also resists water vapor. Both seal air. The DOE notes that spray foam "can fill even the smallest cavities, creating an effective air barrier," and that "some installations can yield a higher R-value than traditional batt insulation for the same thickness."

Fiberglass batt is the most common insulation in American homes for one reason: cost. It is cheap, widely stocked, and fast to install in standard stud and joist bays. Its weakness is that it does nothing to stop air movement on its own. A batt-insulated wall still needs separate air sealing to keep hot air out, because heat rides in on leaking air.

How each handles a 150-degree Arizona attic

In Arizona, the attic is where insulation choice matters most, and this is where spray foam pulls ahead of batt. A vented attic in the Phoenix summer routinely hits 130 to 150 degrees. That superheated air finds every gap, around can lights, top plates, wire penetrations, and the dropped soffits over cabinets. Fiberglass batt lying on the attic floor does nothing to stop that air. The hot air leaks straight through and around it into the living space, and the air conditioner has to remove that heat all day.

Spray foam changes the game by sealing the leaks as it insulates. Many Arizona builders spray foam against the underside of the roof deck instead of on the attic floor. This is called an unvented or conditioned attic. It pulls the whole attic, and the ductwork running through it, inside the home's sealed and insulated boundary. The ducts no longer sit in 150-degree air, so they lose far less cooling. The DOE stresses that air sealing comes first: "it's a good idea to seal air leaks before installing insulation," because air sealing and insulation are two separate jobs. Foam does both at once.

If you stay with a vented attic and batt or blown insulation on the floor, the fix is to air-seal every penetration first, then insulate heavily. That works, but it takes disciplined sealing that is easy to skip. The Department of Energy calls reducing air leakage "a cost-effective way to cut heating and cooling costs," with a payback "often one year or less," but warns that "air sealing alone doesn't eliminate the need for proper insulation." Foam at the roofline is more forgiving, because the seal and the insulation are the same continuous layer. In a climate where the cooling season runs more than half the year, that hot-attic control is the single biggest reason desert homes reach for foam.

R-value, air-sealing, and moisture trade-offs

Spray foam wins on air-sealing and R-value per inch, while batt wins on simplicity and cost, and each handles desert moisture differently. R-value is the measure of resistance to heat flow, and a higher number means slower heat gain. Closed-cell foam gives the most R-value per inch, around R-6 to R-7, open-cell foam less, around R-3.5 to R-4, and fiberglass batt about R-3 to R-4 per inch. Arizona's energy code sets the targets. The Phoenix metro is climate zone 2, where the code calls for about R-38 in the ceiling and roughly R-13 to R-20 in walls, depending on the assembly. Both foam and batt can hit those numbers. The difference is whether the air sealing comes with it. Foam delivers the R-value and the air barrier together. Moisture works differently in the dry desert than in humid climates. Arizona is dry most of the year, so the risk of trapped moisture is lower than in the Southeast, but it is not zero, especially during monsoon and around bathrooms and kitchens. Closed-cell foam resists vapor and can double as a moisture barrier. Open-cell foam and batt let vapor pass, which can be fine in a dry climate but needs thought at the roofline. A builder who knows desert assemblies will spec the right foam type and confirm any vapor control the code requires for your specific wall or roof.

How to choose and what it costs

Choose your insulation by where it goes and how your attic is built, then balance the up-front cost against years of cooling savings. The common Arizona strategy is to put the money where the heat is:

  • Roofline or hot attic: spray foam. Closed-cell or open-cell foam against the roof deck creates a conditioned attic, seals the leaks, and gets the ducts out of the heat. This is the highest-value place to spend on foam.
  • Walls: fiberglass batt (with air sealing) or foam. Batt is the budget choice and works well in walls when the framing is air-sealed. Foam in the walls adds sealing and a bit more R-value for more money.
  • Mix to fit the budget. Many desert custom homes spray foam the roof or attic and batt the walls. You capture the biggest cooling benefit where it counts and hold the overall cost down.

On cost, spray foam runs several times the price of fiberglass batt per square foot, so it is a real budget decision. Treat any price as a current quote, since insulation costs move with material and labor markets. The payback comes through lower cooling bills across a long Arizona season, plus a quieter, more even home and the option of a smaller, cheaper air conditioner because the cooling load is lower.

The practical takeaway is that there is no single winner, there is a right tool for each part of the house. For the punishing Arizona attic, spray foam at the roofline is usually worth it. For the walls, well-sealed batt often does the job for far less.
