
Do I need combustion or makeup air for a gas fireplace in a tight Arizona home?
Often yes. A sealed direct-vent gas fireplace pulls its own combustion air from outside and usually needs nothing extra. An older atmospherically vented or vented gas log set draws air from the room, so a tight Arizona home needs combustion air and makeup air so a kitchen hood cannot backdraft it.
Whether you need combustion or makeup air for a gas fireplace in a tight Arizona home depends on the type of fireplace. A sealed direct-vent gas fireplace pulls its own combustion air from outdoors through a concentric pipe and sends its exhaust straight back out, so it does not borrow air from the room and usually needs no extra combustion air. An atmospherically vented fireplace or a vented gas log set in an open masonry firebox burns air drawn from inside the house, and a modern Arizona home is built tight enough that this becomes a problem. In a sealed home, a strong kitchen range hood or even a bathroom fan can pull enough air to backdraft that fireplace, dragging combustion gases and carbon monoxide back into the living space. That is why the code, and good design, treat combustion air and makeup air as a package on any gas appliance that breathes room air.

Direct-vent vs. vented: which fireplaces need combustion air
A direct-vent gas fireplace usually needs no added combustion air, while a vented or atmospherically drafted unit does, because of where each one gets its air. A direct-vent fireplace is sealed behind glass and uses a concentric vent, a pipe within a pipe, where the outer channel pulls fresh outdoor air in for combustion and the inner channel pushes exhaust out. The fire never touches the air you breathe. The Building America program lists "direct vent appliances with both intake and exhaust pipes installed continuous to the outside" as the clean exception to the combustion-air rules, since the appliance is its own closed loop. For a new Arizona custom home, a direct-vent gas fireplace is the standard, safe choice.
A vented gas log set or an older atmospherically vented fireplace is different. It sits in an open firebox, takes combustion air from the room, and relies on the chimney's natural draft to carry exhaust up and out. That draft is gentle, and it depends on the chimney being warmer than the house. When the room air it depends on gets pulled away by another fan, the draft can reverse. The Building America program warns that Category 1 atmospherically vented appliances "can, like the naturally drafted furnace, have the potential to backdraft." These are the units that need real attention to combustion air and makeup air in a tight home.
So the first question your builder should ask is simple. Is the fireplace sealed and direct-vent, or does it breathe room air? Spec a direct-vent unit and most of this problem disappears. Choose an open vented hearth for the look of a real flame, and you take on the duty of feeding it air and protecting its draft.
What the code requires for combustion air
The code requires that any fuel-burning gas appliance get enough combustion air, and it sets specific volumes and openings under IRC Section G2407. Combustion air is the fresh air a flame needs to burn cleanly. Burn fuel without enough of it and you get incomplete combustion, which produces carbon monoxide. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission puts the danger plainly: "a supply of fresh air is important to help carry pollutants up the chimney, stovepipe or flue, and fresh air is necessary for the complete combustion of any fuel," and "blocking the combustion air flow through the appliance can produce CO."
IRC G2407 spells out how to supply that air. For the indoor air method, the Building America program notes the code requires a room large enough that "the minimum required volume shall be 50 cubic feet per 1000 Btu/h" of total appliance input. A small mechanical room with a furnace, a water heater, and a fireplace can blow past that fast. When the space is too small, the code shifts to an outdoor air method, which uses permanent openings to the outside. For two vertical ducts, the rule is a "minimum free area of 1 square inch per 4000 Btu/h," and for horizontal ducts, "1 square inch per 2000 Btu/h." A confined space in a tight house typically needs two openings, one high and one low, so air can both enter and circulate.
The takeaway is that the volume of the room and the total input of every gas appliance in it decide whether you can rely on indoor air or must duct in outdoor air. On a custom home, your builder runs this calculation during design, not after drywall.
Why a tight Arizona home raises the stakes
A tight Arizona home raises the backdraft risk because a sealed envelope gives replacement air nowhere to come from when a fan runs. Modern desert homes are built airtight on purpose. Spray foam, sealed sheathing, and low-leakage windows cut cooling bills in a climate where you run the air conditioner half the year. That same tightness means the house cannot easily pull in replacement air through gaps when an exhaust fan fires up.
The numbers are smaller than most people expect. The Building America program warns that a natural-draft fireplace "is vulnerable to being backdrafted by forces as small as a 50 CFM kitchen or bath exhaust fan" when the chimney is cool, such as when a fire is just getting started or has burned down to a low flame. That is not a powerful fan. A single bathroom exhaust can do it. Now picture a luxury Arizona kitchen with a pro-style range hood rated at 600, 900, or 1,200 cubic feet per minute. When that hood runs in a tight house with an open vented fireplace nearby, it can depressurize the home and reverse the chimney's draft, pulling exhaust down the flue and into the room.

How to handle it on a custom build
Handle gas-fireplace air on a custom build by choosing the appliance type first, then designing combustion and makeup air around it. Work through these steps with your builder:
- Default to direct-vent. A sealed direct-vent gas fireplace draws and exhausts outside air and sidesteps most combustion-air worry. It is the simplest safe choice for a new home.
- If you want an open vented hearth, plan its air. Size the room or duct combustion air to G2407, and add makeup air so the kitchen hood cannot backdraft the fireplace.
- Add up every gas appliance in the space. The combustion-air calculation covers the fireplace plus any furnace or gas water heater sharing the room, by total Btu/h input.
- Interlock the makeup air with the hood. The makeup air damper should open automatically when the range hood runs, so the system actually works when you cook.
- Install carbon monoxide alarms. The IRC requires CO alarms near sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances. Treat them as the last line of defense, not the plan.
The bottom-line answer is that a direct-vent gas fireplace in a tight Arizona home usually needs no extra combustion air, while a vented or atmospherically drafted unit needs both combustion air under IRC G2407 and makeup air so a hood cannot reverse its draft. Codes and appliance specs change between editions and cities, so confirm the current requirement for your fireplace model and your home's envelope with your builder and the local building department before rough-in.
